RIP Gaylord Perry (1938-2022)

If you're a fan of the 300-Win Club, then you might remember that the exclusive pitching club suffered a major blow in the six months between August 2020 and January 2021 as it lost three of its illustrious members in Tom Seaver, Phil Niekro, and Don Sutton. It was a difficult time, but things seemed to have settled down, or so we thought. Then the news came out today that yet another member of the 300-Win Club had passed away early in the morning of December 1, 2022: Gaylord Jackson Perry, apparently from complications of a coronavirus infection. He was 84 years old.

Of all 24 members of the 300-Win Club, it can be argued that none of them had a more colorful personality than the peanut farmer from Williamston, North Carolina. Perry is perhaps best known for his association with the spitball, a pitch that had been outlawed in 1920 save for a few specialists that were allowed to continue throwing it legally. The last of these, Burleigh Grimes, last pitched in 1934 four years before Perry was born on September 15, 1938. Nevertheless, a few pitchers had kept the art alive. One of these was Bob Shaw, a journeyman who found himself with the San Francisco Giants in 1964, where a young Gaylord Perry was looking for any weapon that can help him stay in the Major Leagues. According to his 1974 autobiography, provocatively titled "Me and the Spitter," Perry first felt comfortable enough to use it in a May 31, 1964 game against the Mets, where he entered the second game of a doubleheader in the 13th and threw 10 scoreless innings to pick up the win after the Giants won in 23 innings. While Perry would proclaim in his book his spitball days were over, he spent the last ten seasons in a cat-and-mouse game with opposing teams and umpires over whether or not he was using the illegal pitch.

With so much focus placed on Perry's potential use of the spitball, fans began to overlook his competitiveness, fundamental soundness, and durability, aspects that allowed him to finish with 303 complete games in 690 starts, Of course it did not help that Perry entered a peripatetic phase in his career shortly after the publication of his book. He had already been traded from the Giants to the Cleveland then-Indians in 1972, the year he won his first Cy Young award. He would get traded to the Texas Rangers in the middle of the 1975 season, where he would pitch three years before getting traded to the San Diego Padres in 1978 for a pitcher that would never pitch for the Rangers. Perry would win his second Cy Young award in 1978, becoming the first pitcher to receive the honor in both leagues, but by 1980 he found himself back to deep in the heart of Texas, where he would stay half a season before he was shipped in a deal to the New York Yankees. He became a free agent for the first time in 1981 and signed with the Atlanta Braves, but he lost several starts thanks to the strike that cut the season in half, and the Braves cut him just three wins from 300, even though nobody had reached the mark since Early Wynn in 1963.

Perry was eventually able to find a team willing to use his services in the sad-sack Seattle Mariners. His 300th win on May 6, 1982 was a big deal and was the only historical moment for fans in Seattle in their first decade of existence. Perry stayed in the Pacific Northwest through 1983 when he was given his release. He hooked on with the Kansas City Royals, where he found himself embroiled in another controversial moment as he swiped George Brett's Pine Tar bat from the umpires after the slugger was called out after a go-ahead home run. Perry would eventually announce his retirement from the game on September 23, 1983, incidentally the day that Steve Carlton joined him in the 300-Win Club. Perry was forced to wait three years to get voted into the Hall of Fame despite having overwhelming numbers, possibly due to his association with the spitball, but he finally entered the Hall in 1991. He had been through some turbulent moments in his life as he lost his beloved wife Blanche in a car accident and found his farm going bankrupt, but he spent his last years becoming an ambassador for the game.

Anyways, there are plenty more to talk about Gaylord Perry's life and career, but you can read those elsewhere. I'll just do what I did with my tributes to Seaver, Niekro, and Sutton and type out all 314 of his regular season wins as well as any post-season wins he might have.
